When the coordinating conjunction and joins similar sentence parts – noun and noun, verb and verb, phrase and phrase – the construction is said to be parallel. When writing your term paper an error in parallel structure occurs when and is used to join unlike constructions.
NOT PARALLEL: on the nature trail, we studied animal camouflage and how leaves change colors (noun and clause).
PARALLEL: On the nature trail we studied animal camouflage and leaf pigmentation. (Noun and noun).
Person, shifts in
Person refers to the point of view a writer uses. A writer may use first, second or third person point of view but the point of view should remain consistent thought out one piece of writing.
SHIFT IN PERSON: Teen- agers participate in many extracurricular activities. Usually you attend these after these after school.
CONSISTENT: Teen-agers participate in many extracurricular activities. Usually they attend these after school.
Agreement: pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number. If the antecedent is singular, the pronoun must be singular. If the antecedent is plural, then the pronoun must be plural.
INCORRECT: In ancient Egypt, a cat-owner shaved off their eyebrows when a pet died.
CORRECT: In ancient Egypt, a cat-owner shaved off his or her eyebrows when a pet died.
Sometimes in your essay indefinite pronouns create problems in agreement. the following indefinite pronouns are always singular: anyone, anybody, anything, each, either, everybody, everything, neither, nobody, no one, one somebody and someone.
INCORRECT: anyone who forgets their ticket will have to make other transportation arrangements.
CORRECT: anyone who forgets his or her ticket will have to make other transportation arrangements.
